Kim Kardashian West Introduces Kimono, a Shapewear Line “for Every Body”

This morning Kim Kardashian West finally lifted the curtain on her latest project, which has been buzzing about the news for a while now: a line of inclusive shapewear that she’s calling Kimono. The Vogue cover girl, lawyer-to-be, and beauty mogul has been working passionately on this collection for the last year, as she noted in the caption for her Instagram post featuring Kimono’s campaign imagery, which was shot by Vanessa Beecroft (a frequent collaborator with Kanye West). “Kimono is my take on shapewear and solutions for women that actually work,” Kardashian West added. “I would always cut up my shapewear to make my own styles, and there have also been so many times I couldn’t find a shapewear color that blended with my skin tone, so we needed a solution for all of this.” Kardashian West follows in the footsteps of Rihanna, who made her game-changing push for inclusivity and diversity at Fenty Beauty and Savage x Fenty. Describing the imagery, Kardashian West continued, “The third pic is a solution short. I developed this style for all of those times I wanted to wear a dress or skirt with a slit and still needed the support.”

The Kimono Solutionwear line (not officially shapewear) will be available in sizes XXS to 4XL and in nine shades. There is no official launch date as of yet, but Kardashian West has undoubtedly stirred up excitement around the drop through this sneak peek. Of everything Mrs. Kardashian West has done, from makeup to perfume, this launch seems particularly apt for a woman whose body has, controversially, been the subject of many a conversation on TV and social media and in the news. “I’ve been passionate about this for 15 years,” Kardashian West added in her caption this morning. Beecroft’s imagery certainly evokes a sense of female empowerment, and we’d venture to guess that Kardashian West will reach countless women with her new Solutionwear, helping them to feel as confident in their own skin as she is in hers.

First Kendall, Now Gigi Is Bringing Back This Grungy Shoe

While many stylish celebrities are embracing quirky shoe trends such as plastic heels or dad sneakers, there’s a crew of models who prefer the timeless appeal of the grungy Dr. Martens lace-up. The thick-sole’d shoe, which was a classic choice on the ’90s punk scene, has been repeatedly worn by Kendall Jenner in the past month and now, Gigi Hadid is putting her stamp on it, too, albeit with an unexpected twist.

Hitting the streets of New York City today, Hadid was spotted wearing the original black Dr. Martens combat boot. But instead of styling it with an obvious rock ’ n ’ roll getup, she slipped on her signature athleisure instead, giving the chunky footwear a fresh, modern feel. She paired the shoes with a white hoodie by Mandkhai and monogram-printed sweat pants by Burberry, which had a side racing stripe detail. Meanwhile, a navy baseball cap, cross-body buckle bag by Prada, and tiny, round sunglasses finished the look off with sleek polish. Now, the official saying is that three’s a trend, but when both Kendall and Gigi wear something? It means the trend is fast-tracked towards becoming a thing.

Beyoncé Embraces Her Natural Curls in a Showstopping Way

If you’ve watched Beyoncé’s new Netflix documentary, Homecoming, about her headlining set at Coachella, you’re well aware that hairography is a big part of the superstar’s performances. The singer’s seriously epic mane—sometimes worn in long, loose waves, or an extra-long braid—only adds to her superhuman persona on stage.

In her everyday approach to beauty, however, Beyoncé continues to serve up some major hair moments as well. Her latest switch-up? Embracing her natural curls. This weekend, she stepped out in New York City to support her husband Jay-Z, who performed at Webster Hall. For the occasion, she called on longtime hair stylist Neal Farinah to work with her hair’s natural texture. “Rocking that beautiful Creole hair,” Farinah wrote, sharing a photo of Beyoncé’s tight, twisted curls, finished with a sleek side part.

The singer is no stranger to embracing a more natural approach to beauty. For her cover shoot for Vogue’s September issue, she wore barely any makeup, and braided her own hair into cornrows. “Every day, for years, [Beyoncé] has had someone picking at her face, pulling on her hair,” Farinah said. “And at the time of this shoot—especially now that she’s a mother of three, a wife, who tours and does interviews—she said, ‘I want to be myself, guys. I don’t want all this hair and all this makeup. I just want to be free.’” Judging by this latest moment, it’s a spirit she’s still channeling—and it makes for one showstopping end result.

A New Fashion Collaboration Is Pushing for Positive Change at the U.S.-Mexico Border

Last fall, President Trump directed his endless ire at the migrant caravan making its way through Central America to the United States–Mexico border. About 2,000 migrants, almost all of them Hondurans, came together starting in San Pedro Sula, a northern city in the Central American nation, and made their way up the coast, following a similar path as the caravan that made its way to Tijuana just a few months before. In turn, President Trump threatened to shut down the border entirely as well as to reduce aid to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

Those migrants made that long desert exodus for a number of reasons: some to apply for asylum in the U.S. or in Mexico, some to escape violence, some setting off in hopes of finding greater opportunities elsewhere. It’s the latter that compelled the family of Los Angeles–based musician Empress Of (a.k.a. Lorely Rodriguez) to relocate to Southern California in the mid-’90s, just a few years before Rodriguez was born. Moreover, that personal history serves as a backdrop for Rodriguez’s latest project, too. Last month, the singer fronted the campaign for a new collaboration between L.A. streetwear label Kids of Immigrants, helmed by two first-generation Americans, Daniel Buezo and Weleh Dennis, and human rights nonprofit Border Angels, which provides support, supplies, and pro-bono legal services to migrants and related communities along the border. The new clothing drop, which has its own GoFundMe page, specifically aims to raise funds to build an additional wing at the Border Angels shelter in Tijuana.

Rodriguez first met designer Daniel Buezo, who is also of Honduran descent, through some mutual friends in L.A. “I told one of my friends how hard it is to find other people in the arts from Honduras, and she was like, ‘You have to meet Danny [Buezo]!’” says Rodriguez. The two hit it off almost immediately. “Representation is a huge thing for me and to see myself in someone else, and seeing him pursue his ambitions with his clothing brand, I saw that reflected in myself,” she says. “Within minutes of meeting, we were talking about the food we ate growing up. Even though I grew up on the West Coast and he grew up on the East Coast, we had a lot of similar experiences because of our culture.”

The result of the collaboration, which takes the form of a gray hoodie emblazoned with the words, “Love has no borders,” originated from Buezo’s recent on-the-ground experience at the border itself. “He was telling me about his experience, and seeing how those kids on the border have the same face as us and how it could have been us, and just wanting to use whatever tools he had to create change,” she says. “A lot of the brand is about spreading positivity and uplifting and empowering people. What I love about Danny’s message is that we’re not victims.”

The campaign images find Rodriguez pairing the casual hoodie with a ruffled floor-length skirt, a combination that mirrors her tomboyish personal style while subtly paying tribute to her heritage. “The stylist, Debbie Gonzalez, was trying to find something that contained the volume of floral skirts from Honduras,” Rodriguez says of the choice to pair the sweatshirt with a skirt, which Gonzalez finished off with a pair of Maison Margiela heels.

Rodriguez has always cited her mother as a major influence in her sense of style—she told Vogue last year that her Dickies- and workwear-filled wardrobe is a reflection of her East Los Angeles upbringing and its large immigrant community—and it’s her mother’s history that influences her tireless creative approach as well. “My mother worked very, very hard. She raised four kids by herself, and I feel very influenced by her work ethic. That’s something that she passed down to me in my own career—just seeing her always figuring out an answer, figuring out her own way to make it work.” This sense of respect runs both ways: “My mom knows I’m vocal about my own experiences as a first-generation American, and she’s supportive of it. I always wear my Kids of Immigrants hoodie out, and she loves it.”

Of Course the Oscar After-Parties Were Filled With Decadent Fashion

The Oscars may be the main event, but they were far from the only fashion spectacle in Hollywood last night. A slew of after-parties brought out a range of stars ready to cut loose in daring looks. From celebrity-hosted soirees like Elton John’s annual watching event and Jay-Z’s Gold Party to hot tickets like Vanity Fair’s yearly bash, nearly every star was accounted for, but a select few raised the bar. With the awards out of the way and a sense of triumph in the air, guests pulled out custom pieces and the best from the runways.

Everyone had their own take on Hollywood glamour: quick-change artists Gemma Chan and KiKi Layne headed direct from Hollywood and Highland, switching from their red carpet dresses into slinkier fare from Tom Ford and Versace. Meanwhile, couples like Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham took center stage in coordinated looks. Even the night’s big winners got into the fun, clutching their Oscars in stately finery as they partied the night away.
