Yara Shahidi Wins the SAG Awards Red Carpet With a Striking Beauty Look

Needless to say, all eyes are on Yara Shahidi. Despite wearing many hats at the age of 17—actress, academic, and activist among them—the Grown-ish star looks nothing short of poised and polished at virtually all times. And tonight’s 2018 SAG Awards ceremony was no exception.

Shahidi stepped out in a custom Ralph Lauren jumpsuit with a sleek, strapless silhouette and sculptural train, complementing her directional fashion look with a dose of fresh beauty that underscored her ever more confident red carpet ethos. With her natural curls worn in a cloud of buoyant ringlets worthy of Diana Ross, she simmered with disco-worthy drama.

And letting her luminous skin show through, she opted for healthy swirls of bright blush on the cheeks and subtle flicks of liner along her almond-shaped gaze. Always one to inject her look with a punch of color, she saturated her lips with a bold burgundy pigment that was softened around the edges. But while Shahidi makes a compelling case for a scene-stealing statement mouth, this wunderkind’s defining characteristic will always be her contagious charisma.

Ariana Grande Hits the Slopes in Vintage Versace

Even with all the opportunities for party dressing, people tend to get a little lax once the holidays roll around. But you won't see Ariana Grande sipping eggnog in an ugly Christmas sweater. Taking to Instagram yesterday in a voluminous Versace puffer, she gave her fans a taste of fashion history by revisiting Gianni Versace’s famous Fall/Winter 1992 Miss S&M collection. Though she chose one of the tamer looks—it’s a little cold for bondage bustier tops—the hourglass silhouette made an impression.

As the perfect alternative to the basic down jacket, Grande’s unique piece (the result of her stylist Law Roach digging into the archives at Resurrection Vintage) provided a sexy take on cold weather dressing. Paired with leggings, platform boots, and oversized ski googles, the look was snow-bunny sophisticate — completely different from anything this diva has worn before.

Kendall Jenner Just Beat This Brazilian Bombshell to Become the World’s Highest Paid Model

As much as being a supermodel is about working with the right designers and building an impressive portfolio, it’s also about turning a profit. When it comes to the biggest stars, the business of being beautiful can be incredibly lucrative, especially for household names like Gisele Bündchen and Kendall Jenner, who lead the pack on Forbes’s newly announced ranking of 2017’s top-earning models. Though the list itself yielded few surprises—Victoria’s Secret Angels, Insta girls, and other headline-making stars all feature—Jenner unseating Bündchen for the top spot was unexpected. Bündchen has held the title every year since the list began in 2002, but Jenner’s reported $22 million figure from the last 12 months—thanks to the combined earnings from her reality show, cosmetics contracts, and endorsements—helped to push her over the edge.

As jaw-dropping as the numbers seem, Jenner and Bündchen’s actual salaries may not match the estimates. While there is no doubt that all the superstars featured on Forbes’s list make millions, the accuracy of the math involved has been the subject of debate. In the past, Bündchen has criticized the publication for inflating her income and subsequently drawing the attention of the IRS. Getting audited shortly after being named highest-earning model in the world, Bündchen told Brazilian blog MdeMulher at the time that her reported income was inaccurate and the attention she received as a result was largely negative. “It’s sad because the people who write these things don’t have my bank account details,” shared Bündchen. “I do okay, I earn plenty, but not as much as they say. I’ve already been audited by the IRS because of this list, and, truthfully, whether I’m on this list or not doesn’t interest me.”

As amusing as it is to chart the upward progression of celebrity incomes, the speculation has its downside. Getting audited isn’t exactly glamorous and according to Bündchen, the focus on the financials doesn’t take into consideration all she is beyond her bank account. “I’ve got the same interests, the same day-to-day life, as any woman. I want to raise my children well, be a good wife, and work. This is what I value: Are my children educated, is my husband happy, are people feeling positive energy from me?” said Bündchen, who wishes the media would talk about less tangible qualities like relevance, intelligence, and personality. “There should be a magazine to quantify knowledge, understanding, and love for people: That is power.” Whether or not Jenner went home with $22 million in the bank or not, it’s clear she’s done well for herself. Being the highest-paid model is nice, but the real accomplishment comes from what you do with all the attention.

This Jewelry Designer Should Be Your Next Instagram Girl Crush

While there are countless brands devoted to a clean, minimal aesthetic, there’s something special about ARC Objects, the brainchild of designer Daniela Jacobs. A Parsons graduate who splits her time between New York and Mallorca, Jacobs says her work celebrates mindfulness and encourages a greater appreciation for “the beauty in small, transient moments.” From her simple yet bold jewelry to her disc-shaped home objects, the porcelain and metal pieces that Jacobs creates are intentionally seasonless.

Her off-kilter designs allow for a greater appreciation of details that might otherwise be overlooked. As she explains, “My designs encourage the reconsideration of the objects we use and wear—for example, a plate of unusual shape further highlights what’s on it.” And now that Jacobs has a new website, it seems like the perfect time to fully immerse yourself in her carefully composed world.

As a kid, Jacobs took an early interest in making things from scratch, crafting miniature paper houses, clothes, and accessories for her dolls. “I found both making things and then using them endlessly entertaining and inspiring. One idea would give way to another, and now, in life-size versions, it’s still that way for me.”

Jacobs’s experimental style was encouraged from an early age by an exceptional teacher, Lisa Mayock, the designer of Monogram and Vena Cava. Before Jacobs studied at Parsons, she took a pre-college fashion class with Mayock, and the two ended up staying in touch. “Over the years she’s become a great friend and mentor. She’s shown me through example how to embody one’s personal style ‘language,’ to think about style from many angles.”

Mayock has also encouraged Jacobs to embrace the more eccentric parts of her personality. These include her perennially purple lip color: “I’ve come to mix three different lipsticks to arrive at the particular shade of wine that I like.” And then there’s her penchant for shapes that are just the slightest bit wonky (one of her recent releases, the Full Circle Plate Set, at first appears to be perfectly round, but due to the fact that each piece is handmade and no two plates are exactly alike, one can sometimes notice the slightest asymmetrical bent).

It’s precisely Jacobs’s ability to experiment with shapes, colors, and textures that make both her Instagram feed and her products so captivating, despite their apparent simplicity. “There is so much boldness in simplicity—in literal and figurative senses—so much strength in the delicate,” she says.

Rihanna Gives an Emerging Eastern European Label Some Star Power

The popularity of Eastern European fashion doesn't seem to be waning anytime soon. Like Bella Hadid, who has worn the cool leather coats of Georgia's Situationist and the hats of Ukraine's Ruslan Baginskiy, Rihanna has also turned her eye towards an emerging designer from Eastern Europe. Yesterday, at the Fenty Beauty launch at Sephora in Madrid, Spain, Rihanna wore a pretty off-the-shoulder dress from the Spring 2018 collection of Ukrainian designer Marianna Senchina. The piece boasted poet sleeves, a puffed print skirt, and had a bodice that was fastened with bows that left slits of skin—as well as Ri Ri's below-the-breastbone tattoo—cleverly visible. Over the past several seasons, Senchina has become well-known, locally and internationally, for her uber-feminine and flouncy creations. She has also sold on e-commerce sites, including Moda Operandi.

The romantic dress is a refreshing change of pace for the Eastern European fashion industry. During the past seasons, there has been a heavy focus on talents that employ a post-Soviet aesthetic, like Russia's Gosha Rubchinskiy or Georgian-born Demna Gvasalia of Vetements. Senchina is one example of a designer paving the way for a new generation who show that these countries have more to offer than the dark, '90s-era styles that have become synonymous with the region's fashion. Now, let's see who Rihanna chooses to thrust into the spotlight next.
